About Castillo las Coloradas
Located in Lanzarote, in the town of Yaiza, there is Castillo de las Coloradas, also known as Torre del Águila, receives the name of Las Coloradas because close to it is the beach of the same name. This fortification dates from 1741 and is one of the most representative examples of military architecture in the Canary archipelago. The objective of the construction of this structure was to defend against attacks by pirates that the island suffered at the time.
The Castle of the Coloradas had to be reformed in 1769 when it was totally destroyed after a fire provoked by Algerian troops.
The fortress has a circular shape, and was raised on the ruins of an ancient tower called Rubicon Tower, it can be accessed through a drawbridge and was built with stone of stonework, wood of tea and lime.
The Tower belonged to the army until 1936, after ceasing to be used as a military fortress it was handed over to the Ministry of Finance and in 1978 the property became the City Council of Yaiza. The town hall was in charge of restoring it, becoming today one of the points of interest of the picturesque coastal path that runs along the south coast of Lanzarote.
