An essential place to be able to know all the customs of the island of El Hierro, is to visit the Casa de Las Quinteras Ethnographic Center, in Valverde. By recognizing the facilities, visitors can learn in depth the uses and customs of the inhabitants of this minor Canary Island.
The museum is divided into four rooms, each dedicated to a type of craft: Workshop, blacksmith and loom, textile, wood and clay crafts. Typical clothes, tools, ceramic pieces such as vases, vases, amphoras, fishing gear and many other objects are part of the collection that is exhibited in the museum. The center also has among its pieces an important part of the collection that make up the ethnographic collections of the Cabildo de El Hierro.
Thanks to the Casa de las Quinteras you can see many of the trades that sustained the economy of the island, many of these trades are practically extinct, so this place honors the memory of those works that today are carried out in a mechanized way and the hand of the craftsman is already totally dispensable.
The museum of Las Quinteras aims to disseminate the importance of these trades for the development of the island, and shows tourists how the inhabitants of El Hierro subsisted strong>.
Next to the center there is also a shop where it is possible to acquire pieces made by the artisans of the island, even today they carry out works, although not with the intensity that they used to do in the past. To know much better the local culture there is no more complete place in El Hierro.
