One of the largest underground military constructions in Canary Islands is this tunnel network of about 7,000 square meters located under a former
barracks in the Tamaraceite strong>. It was built between the 40s and 50s, pretending to be used as a warehouse for fuel and powder keg to supply allied submarines when Franco had in mind to enter World War II supporting the axis.
In these tunnels and bunkers it is still possible to find large doors that seal the old powder magazines, areas where torpedoes were intended to be stored and even old electricity generators.
This infrastructure demonstrates the strategic importance that Canarias could have had in the hypothetical case that Spain had entered the global conflict. The objective was to have a naval base in the islands for the interests of Spain before an expansion by Africa supported by the allies.
