Salinas de Janubio

About Salinas de Janubio

Located in one of the most important municipalities of Yaiza in Lanzarote we can find Salinas de Janubio. These salt mines are the most extensive on the island and were declared a protected natural area and considered a site of scientific interest by the Government of the Canary Islands.

There are several elements that make the salt pans one of the most interesting places on the island, the landscape and ecological value joins the complexity of the hydraulic system and the architecture of the salt.

The salinas were built in 1895 by Vicente Lleó Benlliure on some lagoons that were formed thanks to the volcanic eruption that caused barriers of lava to form between the sea and the lagoon and that It has a circumference of 1000 meters.

The Salinas de Janubio in Yaiza highlights the reddish color that predominates thanks to some small crustaceans called Artemia and has a size of about 440,000 square meters of land that produce salt.

Las Salinas is a place of refuge for migratory waterbirds, it is also a place where they nest, thanks to this it has been included in the Network of Special Protection Areas for Birds. One of the most amazing places in Yaiza
