Volcanic eruptions often cause incredible formations, thanks to which there is the Ice Cave in the Cañadas of the Teide in the middle Teide National Park The insulating character of the volcanic tubes causes ice to be conserved inside when the area is hit by a storm and months after it causes water to remain in the solid state, the rainwater that filters through the cracks the winter freezes and that months later it still remains frozen.
The Ice Cave is located at an altitude of 3,300 meters and has a dimension of about 50 meters in length, having one of the highest sources of the National Park strong>. It is curious to note that the cave has water throughout the year and that it is kept frozen thanks to the isolation of the materials.
This cave was known for centuries and from there the ice that was consumed in the past was removed and it was a luxury item. With beasts and with some long stairs they acceded to the interior of the cave and removed blocks of ice that were taken to the Puerto de la Cruz. It is situated near the Altavista Refuge.
The Cueva de Achbinico was after the conquest the first Christian sanctuary of the Canary Islands in importance and religious diffusion and historically it was also the first Marian sanctuary that existed in the archipelago. This cave dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria (Patron of the Canary Islands) and to San Blas, is located in Candelaria (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain) just behind the Basilica of Our Lady of the Candlemas. In this cave, the Guanches worshiped this Marian image after Christianization. As a result, various archaeological tools from the Guanche era have appeared there, which is why the cave is also a place of great archaeological importance. It has the category of Asset of Cultural Interest, integrated in the Sanctuary of Candelaria.
In the southern part of the island, in the municipal area of Granadilla de Abona we can find a picturesque sanctuary located in a cave, it is known as Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro.
The Sanctuary is close to the Reina Sofía Airport and is dedicated to Pedro de San José Betancur which was popularly known as the Santo Hermano Pedro, it is said that the saint took refuge in these caves when he was a child in which he rested when he was taking care of his family's herd.
Inside the cave you can find a wood carving in honor of the Saint Brother Peter which is next to the offerings that the faithful usually leave in the temple, these offerings they are papers where parishioners write down their wishes and requests.
Pedro de San José Betancur was born on the island of Tenerife although his religious and evangelizing work was carried out entirely in South America, specifically in Guatemala where he helped cure the sick and give hope to the most disadvantaged.
The Cueva del Santo Hermano Pedro was declared Asset of Cultural Interest in 1999 with category Historic Site awarded by Government of the Canary Islands.
