About Castillo de La Luz
The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has some monuments that are privileged witnesses of the passage of the history of the archipelago, one of them is the Castillo de la Luz or also known as Fortaleza de Las Isletas.
The Castillo de La Luz is located on the busy street of Juan Rejón in the heart of the La Isleta neighborhood, bordering the Puerto de La Luz. The fort was built in 1494 when the island was incorporated into the Crown of Castile and the third Governor Alonso Fajardo was given the order to erect the castle . The first objective of Castillo de la Luz was to serve as a defensive fortress against continuous pirate attacks.
The Castillo de la Luz was built on a wooden fort made by Captain Juan Rejón. It was the first defensive structure of the island of Gran Canaria and despite its historical importance it was abandoned practically until 1969 when it was decided to restore it by adding new elements, an outside pit, arches, etc.
The castle is currently used as a cultural center and has been declared Artistic Historical Monument due to its importance for the history of the archipelago.
