About Castillo de Santa Catalina
The Castle of Santa Catalina, located on the island of la Palma, specifically in the center of its capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma Castillo de Santa Catalina was covering the port of La Palma, one of the most important in the routes that made the ships that left the peninsula on their way to the Americas.
The first construction of the Castle of Santa Catalina was completed in May 1554, it was built to protect against pirate attacks suffered by the island regularly. This first construction suffered serious damage and was finally between 1676 and 1701 when the fortification that is known today was completed.
The Castle of Santa Catalina was used by the army until 1808, it has a rectangular floor, among the facilities that the fortification has include a jail, a warehouse -house, bridge wood with a moat that gives access to the castle.
The castle was declared a National Historic Monument in 1949, it is worth noting that it is the only construction in Austria that is preserved in the Canary Islands. La Palma has as one of its symbols the Castillo de Santa Catalina.
