About Convento de Santa Catalina de Siena
The Plaza del Adelantado is one of the nerve centers of the San Cristóbal de La Laguna municipality, besides being a very busy place it has some of the most historic buildings important of the municipality. Among them are the Santa Catalina de Siena Convent, inside it is the body the incorrupt body of María de León Bello and Delgado, known on the island as La Siervita. The convent is formed by the cloister of the Order of Preachers, Dominicans.
The convent was founded in 1606 by the councilman of the island of La Palma Juan de Cabreras and his wife María de Salas after they acquired the house where the conquistador lived Alonso Fernández de Lugo. The first nuns came from Sevilla in 1611.
The façade is topped with a belfry, it is made up of a single nave and has both high and low choirs, a certain influence Mudejar
In its interior it is possible to emphasize the altarpieces and the rejería that serves as separation of the part of closure that dates from century XVII. It is important to highlight the Main Chapel with the great altarpiece that is chaired by the Virgen del Rosario.
The Santa Catalina de Siena Convent has been Asset of Cultural Interest since 1986.
