About Iglesia de San José
In the town of Breña Baja on the island of La Palma you will find the Church of San José. This temple dates from 1548, as many of the other temples that are scattered around the Canary archipelago, the construction arises from the need of the neighbors to have a place for prayer. It was the neighbors themselves who started to collect money and started construction with their own means.
The characteristics of the church of San José in Breña Baja is what is usually used in religious buildings on the island. It is worth noting the heritage that it has inside, the first thing that catches your attention is its main altarpiece, which experts consider it one of the most beautiful altarpieces of the Canarian Baroque.
The chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary is located inside the temple, to the left of the main altar. The temple was recently restored and in 2015 it was reopened once the works were finished, highlighting the entrance door with a balcony overlooking the main façade. The value of the Church of San José is so important that in 1996 it was declared Asset of Cultural Interest.
