With more than 100 years of history, the Izaña Meteorological Observatory, which belongs to the State Meteorological Agency, has become a reference center in terms of weather prediction. . The observatory is about 1370 meters above sea level and was inaugurated on January 1, 1916 in the area of collaboration between Spain and Germany, thus becoming the second observatory of the former National Meteorological Service after the which is located in El Retiro, Madrid.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Izaña Observatory was the only location in the summits of Tenerife in which biologists, geologists, naturalists and hikers were invited to visit what today is the Teide National Park, created later in 1954.

The Observatory is the most important observation platform of Izaña Atmospheric Research in which scientific observations and research on atmospheric composition and radiation are developed.
