Tacoronte

In Tacoronte we can find the Exconvento de San Agustín and Sanctuary of the Santísimo Christ of the Sorrows and Agony of Tacoronte. The convent was built between 1661 and 1662 by Tomás de Castro and Ayala whose order was extinguished at the beginning of the 19th century. From then on the building began to be used as a public building and was used as town hall, jail and even public school, at present they are the dependencies of the House of Culture of the municipality. The Ex-Convent of San Agustín is one of the most important constructions of Tacoronte, the facade is dominated by the fine stonework which gives it much more to the building to give it that monumental air. Among the outstanding elements of the façade are two gargoyles resembling the shapes of dragons, being completely elaborated in stonework and the coat of arms of the Pereyra de Castro, family of Portuguese origin and in its time patrons of the church. You can see a statue of the founder of the Tomás Pereyra de Castro y Ayala temple that brought the image of the Christ that appears in the altarpiece. Formed by three ships with high arches in stonework of the country, of the goldsmithing that has the greater chapel it is possible to emphasize the frontal of the altar and the tabernacle works of the canary Juan Domínguez.

The Ex-Convent of San Agustín and Sanctuary of the Santísimo Christ of the Dolores and Agony of Tacoronte, located in the municipal term of Tacoronte, island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), is formed by a series of constructions that constitute an apple perfectly defined and the buildings that are located around the front plaza, by which the old convent and temple have the main entrance. It currently houses the House of Culture. This block that houses the convent complex and other buildings of interest, faces public spaces on its four facades; bordering the river with the general road that connects Tacoronte with Valle de Guerra, on the west with Plaza del Cristo, on the north with Calle del Cristo and on the south with a new pedestrian street.

Tacoronte has one of the most beautiful gardens on the island of Tenerife, it is the Hamilton Park. The garden is a fantastic green area that has a beautiful Canarian flora among which include species such as Laurisilva or Fayal-Brezal, although it is also possible to see the part dedicated to the vine. This part is especially interesting since visitors will be able to see the different varieties of this fruit from which the best wines of the Canarian archipelago are extracted. The Hamilton Park opened its doors in 2003, is on the edge of a ravine and is a perfect place to relax and enjoy the charms of nature. The visit to the gardens turns into a didactic and fun walk, the different species that can be seen have an informative panel in which each of the species is described. The little ones can also enjoy the gardens where you can see an area for the little ones with fun swings.

The Alhóndiga is an old building of the XVII century built in stone and very sober, which was formerly used as a local granary, and which is currently a cultural space especially dedicated to the world of agriculture.

A prominent place and of which the inhabitants of Tacoronte feel proud is El Calvario. This monument is part of the Alhóndiga and the fountain, work of Marible Sánchez Bonilla. El Calvario is located on the street of the same name and the beginning of Calle la Herrería, located on a triangular island surrounded by pine trees that may be vestiges of the limit of the old forest of descended from the high part of Tacoronte. The niche of Calvary is glazed and inside you can see a set of images such as San Juan, La Magdalena and the Painful. Other important elements are the Chapel of the Virgin of the Rosary, Chapel of the Immaculate or San Lorenzo, the chapel of the Ánimas, the one of the Virgen de El Patrocinio or the one of San José etc. Other elements are the Choir and the Organ, the Pulpit, the Sacristy, canvases of the life of Santa Catalina among others.

Located on the coast of the Tacoronte municipality we can find the natural pools Mesa del Mar a fantastic setting to enjoy a nice sunbath or dive into the waters of the ocean without the swell or strong currents pose a problem. This tourist center located on the coast of Tacoronte about 5 kilometers from the center, has 2 natural swimming pools that in the summer months are a reference point for the inhabitants of the municipality. The Mesa del Mar has a parking area, so you can easily access, also a bar and restaurant to take any appetizer. It should be noted that part of the coastal area of Mesa del Mar is within the Protected Landscape of Costa de Acentejo. Another of the nearby places that are nearby is an interesting archaeological site of the Guanche culture and that in 2007 was declared Asset of Cultural Interest with category Archaeological Zone. There is a tourist trail that runs along the coast of the town and connects the Mesa del Mar neighborhood with the neighbor El Pris.

In the municipality of Tacoronte is the small fishing village of El Pris, a small population center about 6 kilometers from the center of Tacoronte

El Tablón de la Canela es un mesón que se encuentra en Guamasa, en la carretera general del Norte, ubicado en una villa, que cuenta con dos salones cuidados al detalle y una zona exterior muy acogedora. Tiene párking propio y una carta bien surtida.

En la costa de Tacoronte, pasado el túnel de la Mesa del Mar y cuando no se puede continuar a pie se encuentra del conocido como Castillo del Mar, un antiguo edificio abandonado que es testigo del incesante golpeo de mar. Situado entre riscos está este edificio con torre, que lejos de ser un castillo fue una finca de recreo de un rico terrateniente de Tacoronte, es conocido también por el nombre de Castillete de Guayonje o el Castillo de Óscar Domínguez.Está situado en la desembocadura del barranco de Guayonje y en la actualidad está abandonado, y el paso del tiempo lo ha ido deteriorando. Pertenece al Ayuntamiento de Tacoronte y existen varios proyectos sobre la mesa para su reforma pero hoy día es un fantasmagórico lugar pendiente de ser declarado Bien de Interés Cultural.

Un lugar destacado y del cual los habitantes de Tacoronte se siente orgullosos es El Calvario. Este monumento forma parte con la Alhóndiga y la fuente, obra de Marible Sánchez Bonilla. El Calvario se sitúa en la calle del mismo nombre y el inicio de la calle la Herrería, situada sobre una isleta de planta triangular y rodeada de pinos que pueden ser vestigios del límite del antiguo bosque de bajaba desde la parte alta de Tacoronte.El nicho del Calvario se encuentra acristalado y en su interior se puede ver un conjunto de imágenes como la de San Juan, La Magdalena y la Dolorosa. No se saben a ciencia cierta el autor de estas obras, pero se cree que algún artista local las realizó en el siglo XVII porque las fuentes documentales que hablan de este lugar datan de 1674. Por otra parte el Cristo es una imagen más moderna que fue donada.El Calvario sirve de punto de encuentro y retorno en las distintas procesiones que se llevan a cabo de Tacoronte a lo largo del año aunque las fechas claves son la Semana Santa y la Romería de San Isidro.

Tacoronte cuenta con uno de los jardines más bonitos de toda la isla de Tenerife, se trata del Parque Hamilton. El jardín es una fantástica zona verde que cuenta con una bella flora canaria entre la que cabe destacar especies como Laurisilva o Fayal-Brezal, aunque también es posible ver la parte dedicada a la vid. Esta parte es especialmente interesante puesto que los visitantes podrán conocer las diferentes variedades de este fruto del cual se sacan los mejores caldos del archipiélago canario.El Parque Hamilton abrió sus puertas en 2003, esta en el margen de un barranco y es un lugar perfecto para poder relajarse y disfrutar de los encantos de la naturaleza. La visita a los jardines se convierte en un paseo didáctico y divertido, las diferentes especies que se pueden ver cuentan con un panel informativo en el que se describen cada una de las especies.Los más pequeños también podrán disfrutar de los jardines donde se puede ver una zona destinada a los más pequeños con divertidos columpios.
