Moya

Fontanales is a population center that belongs to the Gran Canary population of Moya. It is a neighborhood that has a temple called the Church of Fontanales, it is also known as the Parish Church of San Bartolomé de Fontanales. The image of San Bartolomé that is inside it was recently restored. San Bartolomé is the patron saint of the town and its celebrations are celebrated in August.

Despite being abandoned for more than 50 years, Balnerio de Azuaje is a picturesque place that deserves to be visited. The volcanic nature of the Canary Islands s has made many springs with outstanding mineral-medicinal properties thanks to the composition of the waters of iron, silicates, carbonic gas, hydrosulphuric etc. Coinciding with industrial development at the end of the 19th century, medicinal spas began to gain popularity, thanks to which in Moya the Balneario de Azuaje was created in 1868. The Balneario de Azuaje is located in a natural environment of great beauty, next to a water passage, the creation of this place improved access to there, was built on viaduct to save the canyon of Azuaje. Unfortunately the Balneario de Azuaje closed in 1938, but today there are ruins that show the splendor that this part of the island experienced. The visit is interesting because the surroundings have an impressive beauty, you could follow the course of the ravine and enjoy some routes in the middle of nature.

Arriving at the town center of Moya is one of the most emblematic places, the Iglesia de Nuestra de Candelaria. First of all note that from the back of the church you have stunning views overlooking the north of the island. The church is built on the old temple of Candelaria, was inaugurated in 1957, the first thing that draws the attention of the church is that the architectural type to which it responds is of basic plant with three naves between octagonal pillars and dome on pendentives. The central nave is higher than the two lateral ones and the facade is composed of three bodies. Inside the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria we can find some images of great interest, one of the most important is a size of the Virgen de los Dolores of the sixteenth century plus of course the image of Our Lady of the Candelaria, you can also see other images such as San José with the eighteenth-century child, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and San Judas Tadeo. Another element that stands out is the stained glass windows, those that are on the back of the altar are the most specular.

The Integral Natural Reserve of Barranco Oscuro is a protected landscape located between the towns of Moya and Valleseco in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain).

Moya has an archaeological reserve of great importance is the Reserva Arqueológica de la Montañeta, is a site in which the huge caverns excavated in a natural way stand out. Many cases served as lodging and storage for former residents. The set is quite complex and also holds much interest as a place where Aboriginal people lived, you can see various levels communicated through steps and galleries with other parts of the caves. One of the most outstanding places in La Montañeta is the Gran Cueva de Los Silos, with about thirty meters in length and inside it has hollows which are organized in different floors and levels. It is also possible to see a room where bowls were dug and which, according to the experts, served to carry out religious practices.

Among the natural spaces that can be seen in the Canarian municipality of Moya are Los Tilos de Moya, a fragment of forest that have dimensions that exceed 90 hectares and which is part of the municipality of Moya with Santa María de Guía. The Moya Tilos are part of the Doramas Natural Park and since 1994 it has been declared Special Natural Reserve. The natural environment is home to numerous species, some of them endemic and endangered, such as the Cresta de Gallo. Mentioning more in depth the flora the Tilos de Moya hosts, in addition to the typical one that can be found in the grancanarian montane are Til, the aforementioned Cresta de Gallo , Salvia Blanca and the Bicacaro. Also it is possible to emphasize the fauna that inhabits in this space, you can descry Common Finches, Robins, the Common Buzzard, Kestrel strong> Common and Alpispa. Los Tilos has an abrupt relief, it has the characteristic V-shape of the ravines that dominate the island, which shows its geologically speaking youth. The sea of clouds that usually covers the area favors the existence of water and provides flow to the channel that runs through this place.

The Caldera de los Pinos belongs to the Natural Monument of the Black Mountaineer in Gran Canaria, specifically in the municipality of Moya Geologically the volcano that gave rise to the island of Gran Canaria is one of the most recent but the vegetation of the area has had more than enough time to cover this interesting point. The Pino Canario is the one that dominates the landscape in La Caldera hence the name of the crater, eruptive mouth and by extension the volcanic building. Close to the Caldera of the pines you can also find the viewpoint from where you can admire stunning views of the island. This area of centenary pines is located at the foot of a watchtower from where you can see all the north of the island.

In Moya you will find the natural site Los Tilos de Moya, one of the most interesting places of laurisilva that can be found in the whole Canary archipelago, there is also a great amount of hiking routes that can be covered and that leads to the most beautiful corners of this nature reserve. Within the same natural area of Los Tilos de Moya there is an interpretation center where it is possible to know in depth the importance of this place thanks to the large amount of flora and fauna endemic, some of them like the Cresta de Gallo that are seriously threatened. The Interpretation Center has 2 exhibition rooms in which, in a didactic way, you can find out all the details of the Los Tilos training. There are also panels in which history and natural values are collected in addition to the traditional uses of this forest.
