About Plaza del Adelantado
La Laguna is one of the most beautiful cities on the island of Tenerife, a city whose historic center is a World Heritage Site. The Plaza del Adelantado is one of the most interesting points of the city, a place in the heart of the city with imposing trees, surrounded by historic buildings of the sixteenth century and perfect for resting.
The Plaza del Adelantado has the name of the first Adelantado, Alonso Fernandez de Lugo, the conqueror of the island of Tenerife . The square was the place to celebrate the most important events that took place in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, parties, street markets, processions, a type of turning that was called cane breakage and even bullfighting bulls, in short the Plaza del Adelantado was one of the nerve centers of the municipality.
The dimensions of the Plaza del Adelantado have always been the same, but over the years it has received different renovations, in 1798 the square was paved, after the landscaped areas were distributed, in 1870 the central fountain that dominates the square was added. The fountain is made of marble, was commissioned to the French city of Marseille, made with superimposed cups that hold small columns with masks with ornamental motifs.
