Bordering the Tigalate ravine in the municipality of Mazo there are caves of natural formation that in ancient times served for the aborigines of the island to settle, it is the well-known as Ruins of Tigalate Hondo Archaeological Zone.
According to the experts, the natural caves are formed by a longest volcanic tube on the island of La Palma, with about 2000 meters traveled. The undoubted highlight of the site are the rock engravings, made by chopping the rock, the theme shown in these engravings are basically geometric and alphabetic motifs.
It is divided into a part where there are two caves that were inhabited by aborigines and the area of the engravings, with concentric circles, spirals and simple curvilinear. These motifs are made by chopping the stone and are in two stone blocks located in the same channel of the ravine and inside the caboco cave.
The rock engravings located in the Tigalate Hondo deposit were declared Assets of Cultural Interest in 1985. It is undoubtedly one of the most interesting places that can be find on the island of La Palma.
