The Brea furnaces are located in the town of Arico, in the middle of La Corona Forestal Natural Park. In this area there are still remnants of what was once an important industry that began to proliferate after the conquest of Tenerife ended around 1496 and whose activity lasted until the end of 1640.
Pitch furnaces predates the founding of the Arico municipality and Portuguese teachers were responsible for its operation. Pitch was a product with great interest for countries such as Spain, Holland, France or the United Kingdom, was used to waterproof ships and to obtain 15 kg of product was necessary 100 kg of firewood.
The cabildo granted administrative concessions for the exploitation of forest areas, in exchange for financing through taxes.
Currently, some of these ovens are still preserved and at this point of Arico it is possible to discover them.
In the Sauzal you will find the House Museum of the Servant of God, which was the dwelling where Sister María de Jesús lived that was known in the Canary Islands as the Siervita de Dios. This nun led an austere and simple life in a convent of La Laguna, throughout her life several miracles were attributed to her, although three years after her death the incorrupt body of the nun was miraculously discovered .
For years, every February 15 the House Museum of the Servant of God receives hundreds of parishioners to see through the sarcophagus the body of the Servant of God, to which prayers and promises are directed.
It is believed that the current Casa Museo which is located in Sauzal was the birthplace of Sister María de Jesús , in him it is possible to know in depth the life and the miracles that are attributed to them. Through the utensils, documents and furniture you can know how was the day to day of the Servant of God.
