In Tejeda you will find the highest altitude in the province of Las Palmas, the Pico de las Nieves, with a height of 1,956 meters above sea level. The Pico de las Nieves is practically in the center of the island of Gran Canaria and hosts different protected points of the island, such as the Protected Landscape of the Summits, the Nublo Rural Park or the Riscos de Tirajana Natural Monument.

At the peak is the highest viewpoint of Gran Canaria, from which you can see, on clear days, some of the islands that make up the archipelago, and make out part of the island and, specifically, a sector that was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco. The view from this point is unparalleled, by the ravines that are around with their sharp edges, and by some points crowned by volcanic pythons of enigmatic forms.

At the top of the Pico de las Nieves there is a semicircle covered in stone that faces west from whose viewpoint there are stunning sunsets, even more beautiful when there is sea clouds It is one of the most interesting natural spectacles of Tejeda.

3. Montaña La Retamilla

The Montaña de la Retamilla is located on the island of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Valleseco. It should be noted that Montaña de la Retamilla is the point on the island where the greatest number of precipitations falls throughout the year. The Retamilla is located at an altitude of approximately 1450 meters above sea level and is within the Las Cumbres Protected Area, a space that plays an important role in the maintenance of ecological processes such as collecting water from the rain. It is a landscape with peaks where you can find unique natural elements of geological and geomorphological interest.

It should be noted that in the Montaña de la Retamilla offers of the castañeros from all the archipelago, any time of the year is good to visit it, in summer it will surprise the greenery of its leaves, autumn as they turn to a multitude of brown tones, in winter all its branches are clear and already in spring it dominates the green and yellow and appearance of the flowers.

It should also be mentioned that the name of La Retamilla is due to the amount of brooms that can be found in the area.

The natural spaces dominated by mountains are a constant in Artenara, one of them is the massif of Altavista, also known as Azaenegue strong>. This massif represents the stony frontier that slows the trade winds which makes one part of the mountain wet and the other dry and more influenced by a hot climate and the highest point exceeding 1300 meters above sea level.

This curiosity also influences the types of flora and fauna that exist both on one side and on the other side of the massif. You can see canary pines, junipers, heather stands among others.

From Altavista or Azaenegue is a watchtower from where it is possible to look out and contemplate the region of Tamadaba, Tirma or La Caldera composed of an environment of breathtaking beauty.

In the area of Altavista it is also possible to discover a curious fauna, birds such as woodpeckers, hawks, kestrels or crows inhabit the poinales, also on rare occasions you can see hawks. In the south you can see lizards, perencans or even mountaineering bats.

The life that runs through the corners of Altavista is very rich, a superb natural environment.

In the municipality of Ingenio on the island of Gran Canaria you will find a wonderful natural environment called: Montaña de las Tierras which is a spectacular dark reddish volcanic rock that emerges from the deep ravine of Guayadeque and joins the towns of Agüim and Ingenio.

The Mountain of the Earths in the Ingenio stand out about 150 meters and more than 1000 meters above sea level. This natural landscape not only attracts the attention of visitors and tourists, but is also the object of study by scientists for the magma varieties that emerged.

The vicinity of the Mountain of the Earths is surrounded by the Barranco de Guayadeque that keeps an unpublished history since it starts in the Caldera de los Marteles until the end in Ingenio, on the beach of Burrero. It keeps a wide vegetation, with springs of water that from the beginning of the XX century do not arise. The ravine hosted an important aboriginal settlement and later shepherds were established.

The Mountain of the Earths and all its surroundings is an impressive natural place, rich in flora and native fauna and ideal to enjoy days in the middle of nature.

In the heart of Gran Canaria is the municipality of Valsequillo de Gran Canaria, this town hosts the Special Natural Reserve of Los Marteles . Here nature lovers can enjoy hiking trails that surround one of the most beautiful places in the archipelago, the Caldera de los Marteles.

The Caldera de los Marteles has an elliptical shape, with a diameter that exceeds 550 meters and a depth of 80 meters. The caldera was formed after the explosion of a volcano of the freomagmatic type when the magma came into contact with water at least a million years ago. The whole basin is a leafy area of cultivation, surrounded by spectacular landscapes and highlighted by the flat surface in counterpoint with the steep slopes.

The Caldera de los Marteles is located at an altitude of 1500 meters above sea level, bounded on the north by the erosive escarpments of the cliffs of Tenteniguada and south with the Barranco de Tirajana, also borders the backs of Temisas and collects the channel of the Barranco de los Cernícalos. You can see acebuchales, willow trees and threatened species like the wild tomato.

In Artenara you can find one of the highest points of the Island, it is the so-called Alto de los Moriscos, an ideal natural spot for nature lovers where you can disconnect and admire the richness of this part of the Island.

At the tip of Morisco it is a cold place in winter, it is possible to see snow, and summers are usually torrid . With regard to flora, the landscape is dominated by Canarian pine, although these are repopulated and many of them do not have easy survival due to snow, heat and winds. Other species of flora if they endure better the hardness of the climate, the bushes silver masonry, white sage of the summit, wallflower or rosalito are some of these bushes that can be seen in Alto de los Moriscos


The fauna that can be found in the Morisco are a great variety of invertebrates and birds like the road and canaries that are the ones that best endure the inclemency of the weather.

Los Moriscos is an ideal place to get to know beautiful spots and enjoy hiking trails, all in full contact with nature.

The Agüimes mountain is located in the southwest sector of the island, very close to the town of the same name. This protected area is a volcanic manifestation of the oldest on the island where it is possible to observe archaeological paintings and engravings, among which we can highlight El Hombre de Guayadeque, considered the symbol par excellence of the Aboriginal culture of the Canary Islands.

This protected landscape is located next to the stretch of the Guayadeque ravine and you can find a variety of flora such as sweet tabaiba, balos, vinegars, it is also possible to see Canary palms .


With respect to the archaeological remains besides those mentioned, remains have been found in the caves of the Morros de Ávila or rock engravings in Morro Cuervo. In addition to this, habitational caves and necropolis have also been found in the Banda de Agüimes that show the great importance of this enclave.


Due to the important remains that can be found in the mountain of Agüimes, it has been declared Good of Cultural Interest.
