1. Monumento Natural del Roque Nublo

The Roque Nublo Natural Monument is one of the most interesting places on the island of Gran Canaria, located in the municipality of Tejeda strong>, has dimensions of 451 hectares and whose symbol is the rock that stands out imposing from one of the crests. The rocky monolith of the Roque de Nublo is of erosive origin being a unique landscape and full of beauty.

According to experts the Roque Nublo was formed in five episodes of volcanic origin, is one of the largest in the world and presides over the Caldera de Tejeda which is one of the largest on the island, it has a height of 80 meters from its base and is more than 1800 meters above sea level.

The imposing landscape made this point a place of worship for the aborigines of the island, since 1987 it is protected as a natural space.

The Roque de Nublo and all its surroundings is a perfect place to enjoy nature in all its splendor, it is possible to make paths of great beauty trails, it is also possible to make treaking and from the heights you can see the Caldera de Tejeda, Llanos de la Pez and the Pozo de las Nieves.

2. Pico de las Nieves

In Tejeda you will find the highest altitude in the province of Las Palmas, the Pico de las Nieves, with a height of 1,956 meters above sea level. The Pico de las Nieves is practically in the center of the island of Gran Canaria and hosts different protected points of the island, such as the Protected Landscape of the Summits, the Nublo Rural Park or the Riscos de Tirajana Natural Monument.

At the peak is the highest viewpoint of Gran Canaria, from which you can see, on clear days, some of the islands that make up the archipelago, and make out part of the island and, specifically, a sector that was declared a Biosphere Reserve by Unesco. The view from this point is unparalleled, by the ravines that are around with their sharp edges, and by some points crowned by volcanic pythons of enigmatic forms.

At the top of the Pico de las Nieves there is a semicircle covered in stone that faces west from whose viewpoint there are stunning sunsets, even more beautiful when there is sea clouds It is one of the most interesting natural spectacles of Tejeda.

In Gran Canarias, in San Bartolmé de Tirajana you will find one of the most spectacular and beautiful places of the Canarian archipelago, the Maspalomas Dunes. This part of the island is also known for having the Playa del Ingles, the Maspalomas Lighthouse and Meloneras, but they are undoubtedly the dunes which makes this point one of the most visited in Gran Canaria.

The good weather is a constant in the southern part of the island, so it is perfect to enjoy the Natural Reserve of the Dunes of Maspalomas. This reserve is formed by three different ecosystems, the Palmeral, the Pond and the Dunes, three zones that form a natural space of incalculable value.

The Dunes of Maspalomas has about 400 hectares, is a place of contrasts where the golden sand collides with the blue waters that bathe the coast. In addition, we must highlight the amount of wildlife that pass through the Natural Reserve, Storks, Common Redfish, Common Coot, Chorlitejo Chico, Pinto Starling, Pipit Caminero, Turkish Tortoise, other migratory bird species such as Common Flamingo, Common Egret, Great Gray Heron, Hoopoe, Whimbrel, Tridactyl Sandpiper, Vuelvepiedras and reptiles such as the Giant Lizard of Gran Canaria or Perenquén de Boettger.

5. Montaña La Retamilla

The Montaña de la Retamilla is located on the island of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of Valleseco. It should be noted that Montaña de la Retamilla is the point on the island where the greatest number of precipitations falls throughout the year. The Retamilla is located at an altitude of approximately 1450 meters above sea level and is within the Las Cumbres Protected Area, a space that plays an important role in the maintenance of ecological processes such as collecting water from the rain. It is a landscape with peaks where you can find unique natural elements of geological and geomorphological interest.

It should be noted that in the Montaña de la Retamilla offers of the castañeros from all the archipelago, any time of the year is good to visit it, in summer it will surprise the greenery of its leaves, autumn as they turn to a multitude of brown tones, in winter all its branches are clear and already in spring it dominates the green and yellow and appearance of the flowers.

It should also be mentioned that the name of La Retamilla is due to the amount of brooms that can be found in the area.

6. Caldera de Bandama

The Caldera de Bandama is part of the municipal district of Santa Brígida, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The routes that run through this natural landscape are fantastic and go through the ravines of Las Goteras and Guiniguada to the east coast.

The Caldera was formed approximately five thousand million years ago next to the Bandama volcano, it is about 216 meters deep, 574 meters high and about a thousand meters in diameter. Not only does it have an important geological value, it also stands out as an archaeological site since the Cueva de los Canarios can be found, where the first inhabitants of the island stored the crops and food.

The Caldera de Bandama. that owes its name to a well-known Flemish merchant surnamed Van Damme, crosses the Cornical viewpoint, continues through the Casas del Fondo, the cave of the Bodegas, the pond of El Culatrón and the crossing of the three stones.

In the area you can see plants such as the white tajinaste and the wild olive as well as birds such as the kestrel, the capirote and other native birds.

7. Barranco de la Virgen

Located in the municipality of Valleseco the Barranco de la Virgen is part of the Doramas Rural Park, one of the most protected landscapes important of the Canarian archipelago.

In the Barranco de la Virgen you can still find remains of the laurel forest that used to occupy a large part of the island in former times. This ravine also houses another one called the Barranco Oscuro which has the category of Reserva Integral Natural which is the maximum level granted by the Network of Natural Spaces of the Canary Islands

The landscapes that can be found in this part of the island are impressive, strong cliffs that preserve an endemic flora unique to this part of the island such as La Cresta de Gallo or the Salvia Blanca.

This Barranco de la Virgen has an abundance of water so it developed as an important area of agriculture, you can see old estates and manor houses in addition to mills that once They served to promote economic development.

The Barranco de la Virgen is surrounded by imposing mountains, you can find a lot of springs such as Los Chorros, El Rapador, San Juan etc. The climate is characterized by mild temperatures and moderate rainfall.

8. Macizo de Altavista

The natural spaces dominated by mountains are a constant in Artenara, one of them is the massif of Altavista, also known as Azaenegue strong>. This massif represents the stony frontier that slows the trade winds which makes one part of the mountain wet and the other dry and more influenced by a hot climate and the highest point exceeding 1300 meters above sea level.

This curiosity also influences the types of flora and fauna that exist both on one side and on the other side of the massif. You can see canary pines, junipers, heather stands among others.

From Altavista or Azaenegue is a watchtower from where it is possible to look out and contemplate the region of Tamadaba, Tirma or La Caldera composed of an environment of breathtaking beauty.

In the area of Altavista it is also possible to discover a curious fauna, birds such as woodpeckers, hawks, kestrels or crows inhabit the poinales, also on rare occasions you can see hawks. In the south you can see lizards, perencans or even mountaineering bats.

The life that runs through the corners of Altavista is very rich, a superb natural environment.

9. Parque Natural de Pilancones

The Pilancontes Natural Park located in the town of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, is designated as a protected area in 1987, an area of ecological sensitivity with " reasons for prevention of ecological impact ". The Natural Park of Pilancones houses the public mounts of Ayagaures and Pilancones, is bordered by the Parque Rural de Nublo and the Protected Landscape of Fataga and in turn houses the area of special protection for birds.

Due to its special characteristics, the Pilancontes Natural Park plays an important role in soil protection and aquifer recovery. One of the most interesting spots in the natural area is the pine forest of the Canarian variety located in the highest part, a very favorable place for the poultry populations, hence it is in a zone of special protection for birds. In the lower parts the main flora is dominated by cardonal and tabaibals.

The park has dimensions exceeding 5,700 hectares, has deep ravines and narrow interfluves, it is possible to find endemic species in danger of extinction and important archaeological sites such as the Necropolis Tumular of Arteara.

10. Parque Natural de Tamadaba

The Tamadaba Natural Park is located in Agaete on the island of Gran Canaria. The most remarkable thing about this natural environment is that one of the territories that the hand of man has altered the least, which shows the richness of this point of Agaete. Tamada has about 7,500 hectares that goes from the western coast of the island and is declared by Unesco as Biosphere Reserve. The native Canarian pine forests on the summits and the imposing cliffs and the biodiversity that can be found in the ravines are the elements that make this park so rich.

In the Tamadaba Natural Park you have to walk in the shade of the Canarian pines or have a picnic in the recreational area of Llanos de La Mimbre or admire from the peak of La Bandera the dense forest full of life.

From the viewpoint of El Balcón, even within the Tamadaba Natural Park you can have a fabulous view of the marine cliffs that have a curious form of dragon's tail or the beach of Guayedra with its ravine dotted with palm trees.
