In the neighborhood of Punta de Abona belonging to the Villa de Arico, the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes is located, sanctuary in honor to the virgin that gives name to the temple. It is the oldest religious foundation of the Abona kingdom, from the 16th century, followed in importance by the Virgen de Candelaria.

The temple dates back to the beginning of the 17th century and is located in a place where vestiges of the first settlers of the island have been found.

Arico el Nuevo is a population center that belongs to the villa of Arico. This point is called "new" because it was built a posteriori by people who belonged to the old Villa.

Arico el Nuev or is located about 5 kilometers from the municipal capital and has an altitude of about 241 meters above sea level, has the parish church of Our Lady of Light.

This small nucleus has the badge of Good of Cultural Interest in the category of Historical Set in 2007 because it has a set of buildings of great value not only historical but ethnographic and architectural that give good sample of the reflections of the Canarian life of the eighteenth century.

Arico el Nuevo was founded throughout the 18th century, adjoining the royal road that communicated the payment of La Degollada with the Porís de Abona, which was the main port in the area. Arico el Nuevo was of great importance due to the installation of families that came from the Arico Lomo. In addition to the historic buildings, the Our Lady of Light temple is one of its most valuable treasures, erected on land donated by captain Gil Gómez Morales.

The Mountain Sentinel is a natural monument that is located in the coastal area of Villa de Arico. The main attraction offered by the Montaña Centinela is that it is a piroplastic cone that is accompanied by surrounding peripheral plains occupied by an important community of Cardonal-Tabaibal.

As you get closer to the mountain you can see better the type of landscape, very characteristic of the southern part of the island and where there are more ancient eruptions around the sentinel mountain. In the area you can find kestrels or lizards that can be seen in other parts of Tenerife.

The value of the Mountain Sentinel is important, so much so that it was declared a natural monument and area of ecological sensitivity by the Autonomic Law.

7. Villa de Arico

The Villa de Arico located on the island of Tenerife is also known as El Lomo. This small town has about 630 inhabitants and borders on Las Cañadas del Teide, Arico Viejo, Los Gavilanes and Arico Nuevo, Poris de Abona and La Cistera.

The name of Arico comes from the term "aricar" which means to plow very superficially, this gives good sample of the agricultural past of this part of Tenerife, although also, other experts affirm that it is a term brought from Guanche.

Arico receives the title of village from the hand of the king Alfonso XIII thanks to the economic boom that the population nucleus had at the beginning of the 20th century.

Arico began to be built in 1590, until 1610 it does not have the hermitage of San Juan Bautista, many houses are built around the temple, which is today the historic center of the municipality , one of the most beautiful claims for visitors.

The Church of San Juan Bautista de la Villa de Arico is undoubtedly one of the most important treasures that are part of the heritage of this municipality on the island of Tenerife It was declared a historical and artistic monument in 1985. The surroundings of the temple are the most outstanding architecturally speaking part of the municipality.

The church of San Juan Bautista de Arico reveres a small Gothic image of Our Lady of Abona, patron of southern Tenerife besides being the patron and the perpetual mayor of the municipality of Arico.

The current building of the church of San Juan Bautista was built in the 18th century, it is formed by a single nave and two lateral ones forming a Latin cross floor, with coffered ceilings. It began to be built in 1747 by Juan de Armas, which was an important extension of La Orotava, the works were completed in 1755. It is worth highlighting the ceilings of coffered ceilings and the main façade with Baroque and late Gothic architectural elements.

Among the treasures they hold is the image of the Virgen de Abona, the Virgen del Rosario or the Virgen del Carmen as well as a monstrance and several chalices of golden silver.
