1. Castillo de Santa Bárbara

The Castillo de Santa Barbara is one of the symbols of the Teguise population in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This strength was in principle simply a lookout tower built in the fifteenth century and whose aim was to spot possible attacks by pirate invasions, the person in charge of building it was Sancho de Herrera.

In the sixteenth century a series of improvements were made to the tower, which made it expand and became what is now known as Castillo de Santa Bárbara, served as shelter for the population of Teguise in case it was invaded.

In the 17th century the Castillo lost a bit of importance due to the construction of other fortifications in the port area of Arrecife. A century later, the pirate attacks had disappeared so that it ceased to have the strategic importance it had had until then. At the moment it has been given another type of utilities, since the beginning of the 90 until 2011 it was used as Ethnographic Museum of the Canary Immigrant until it was closed again. Currently Castillo de Santa Bárbara hosts the Piracy Museum, where you can get to know the most famous pirates and learn about the invasions suffered by the island in past centuries. .

4. Castillo las Coloradas

Located in Lanzarote, in the town of Yaiza, there is Castillo de las Coloradas, also known as Torre del Águila, receives the name of Las Coloradas because close to it is the beach of the same name. This fortification dates from 1741 and is one of the most representative examples of military architecture in the Canary archipelago. The objective of the construction of this structure was to defend against attacks by pirates that the island suffered at the time.

5. Palacio del Marqués

In the city of Teguise in Lanzarote there is the Casa Palacio del Marqués de Lanzarote. The importance of this palace is that it was the house of government of the Island of Lanzarote from the fifteenth century, until the invasions of the drunkards left it practically in ruins.

The Palacio del Marqués belonged to the Herrera y Rojas family that lived in Teguise and that turned the villa into one of the political and social centers of the island.

In its beginnings the palace occupied a great extension, it gave to the back of the parochial church of Teguise. In 1692 he sought permission to create a hospital with a church and liturgical service under the congregation of San Juan de Dios, in 1698 he gave some houses to install the hospital, but finally it was not done .

The insistence of Carrasco did not end here and early eighteenth century from a church already built the previous century. The convent presents a facade of double composition, on the door on the right in red ridge, the symbols of the Dominican Order.

In the Municipality of Tinaja in Lanzarote there is one of the most striking natural elements of the island, known as Natural Monument of the Cave of the Naturalists or Cueva de las Palomas. The Cave of the Pigeons or Cave of the Naturalists constitutes a singular and very representative geomorphological element, the visitors that accede to it will be surprised with the galleries that run through its interior, the great beauty that its different rooms and scientific interest keep, which makes it stand out from other caves on the island.

The volcanic tube formed the pahoehoe flows of the final phases of the Timanfaya eruption in 1730 and 1736. The formation is associated with changes in the volume of lava emitted during the active period, its interior has been mapped by speleologists and has a north-east orientation and extends along a length of 1640 meters. In the layout that draws is divided into 2 branches, they have a high degree of conservation and is characterized by showing the full range of characteristic morphologies of this type of volcanic caves.

In Tinajo one of the most important temples that can be visited is the Ermita de los Dolores, whose construction is linked to the volcanic phenomena that occurred in the area. from the year 1730 to 1736. The inhabitants of Tinajo made a promise to the Virgin and after remitting the eruptions erected this temple in gratitude.

It is estimated that the construction of the hermitage began in 1774 when, according to legend, a virgin appeared to the shepherd Juana Rafaela on the slopes of the caldera Guiguan so the cult was opened between 1781 and 1785.

The hermitage is formed by a single nave, its architectural style corresponds to the guidelines presented by the insular temples. On the right side you can see the sacristy and that for years served to give shelter to people who came to the temple on a pilgrimage. 10. Convento de San Francisco
