Iglesia de San Marcos

The most important temple of Icod de los Vinos and the district is the Church of San Marcos Evangelista. In its origins the Church of San Marcos was a small hermitage that was a subsidiary of the Parish Mother of the Apostle Santiago de Los Realejos and was raised around 1500 as a result of the appearance of the image of San Marcos Evangelista. According to tradition, the image of San Marcos Evangelista appeared on the beach and ended up giving it a name before the conquistadors arrived on the island of Tenerife. The latest reforms the church has received have given it the appearance it has today. Works of imagery from workshops that come from different parts of the world can be seen on its walls. For example the recumbent Christ is a carving that was brought from Mexico and is made with corn paste, we must also talk about the sculpture of Santa Rosa de Viterbo that arrived in Icod from Seville and finally highlight the San Marcos with a marked style Gothic. The Church of San Marcos is located in the square of the same name although it is officially the Park of Lorenzo Cáceres.
