1. Casa Museo Pérez Galdós

Benito Pérez Galdós was a novelist, dramatist, chronicler and politician who was born in Las Palmas de Gran Canarias and who best represents the realist novel of the 19th century. The writer lived on the island until he was 19 years old when he moved to Madrid.

As a tribute to this illustrious citizen of Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, the house museum that bears his name was opened in a traditional 19th century house in the Vegueta district. The building has all the characteristics of domestic architecture of the nineteenth century, its distribution follows the traditional model around two central courtyards, maintaining both the structure and the original materials, although some modifications were made to turn it into a museum.

In the Casa-Museo Pérez Galdós there is a permanent exhibition about the writer, the different rooms are conceived as a well-documented recreation of the domestic and family environments in which life passed from Pérez-Galdós.

Distributed by its salts you can see different pieces of furniture, works of art, photographs, many decorative objects, musical instruments and a long list of elements that describe the everyday environment of the writer in the 19th century.

2. Casa de los Arroyo

The Casa de los Arroyo is one of the icons of Arrecife. A building that dates from the XVIII century and that originally belonged to the Armas family and later to the Arroyo family. It is especially striking that the type of architecture with popular and domestic dyes, currently the Casa de los Arroyo is the headquarters of the Blas Cabrera Scientific-Cultural Center.

The importance of the Casa de los Arroyo has led it to be declared a historical-artistic monument, the roof of the Arab tile building must be removed, something unusual in the constructions of the archipelago.

The Casa de los Arroyo was used as a customs office in times when the capital Arrecife was not the urban center that it is today and it was only a port of entry and exit to the island whose capital then was Teguise.

Following the architecture of the house, it has a sober style where the patio, balconies and wooden stairs stand out. The building also usually hosts artistic exhibitions, which is why it sometimes becomes the nerve center of the capital of Lanzarote.

3. Ecomuseo de Guinea

To know part of the culture of the Isla de Hierro it is essential to visit the Ecomuseum of Guinea, a pre-Hispanic town at the foot of the Risco de Tibataj e. This is the oldest settlement in the Canary Islands together with La Albarrada and Montañetas, also in El Hierro.

This interesting route shows the evolution of the houses on the island since the seventeenth to the twentieth century. The ecomuseum is outdoors and was inhabited until the 1950s.

Constructions are an interesting example of the island's popular architecture, where stones and highs ( rye straw) are the bases and the most characteristic. The Ecomuseum of Guinea not only shows the architecture itself, but these buildings have all the elements with which they were equipped and used by the ancient inhabitants for their daily tasks.

It is also possible to know the agriculture of the village, since there are traditional crops from which the old inhabitants of the village lived. In short, a tribute to the island and its history.

Also located in the site of the Ecomuseum of Guinea but as an independent visit it is possible to access the Guinea volcanic tube. An essential place to learn more about the geology of El Hierro, its composition and its formation.

In the area archaeological remains have been found that are exposed to visitors. These remains give a good account of the way of life and cultivation techniques thanks to the tools and tools of the ancient aborigines of El Hierro.

One of the charms that this museum has is that it is outdoors, which allows visitors to walk through the old streets and get an idea of what life was like in the settlement.

Also adjacent to the Ecomuseum of Guinea it is possible to know the Recovery Center of the Giant Lizard of El Hierro. In the center they are dedicated to the conservation of this reptile that is in danger of extinction and that is at the same time one of the symbols of the island.

4. El Museo Canario

The Canary Museum is a scientific and cultural society founded in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) in 1879 at the initiative of several members of the local bourgeoisie headed by Dr. Gregorio Chil y Naranjo and the historian and notary Agustín Millares Torres.
In its headquarters, located in the historic district of Vegueta, a permanent and monographic collection is exhibited about the aboriginal population of the island of Gran Canaria, the Canarii. Regarding its exhibition content, the museum's collection is composed of an innumerable amount of materials, either complete objects, or fragments, coming, in most cases, from Gran Canaria; Completing with materials from other islands of the Canary Islands. Among the collections that it conserves, ceramic containers deserve to be highlighted because of their varied typology and decorative beauty; the terracotta figurines, traditionally considered as idols, as for example the Idol of Tara, with a wide representation for Gran Canaria; and the calls pintaderas, of which more than 200 pieces are available.

Relevant importance also has the collection of anthropological remains that has been studied by different researchers since the beginning of this museum foundation.
The background is completed by numerous pieces of lithic and bone industry, woven in skins and vegetal fibers, malacological material, remains of fauna and vegetable products.
Another important part of El Museo Canario is its documentation center, which is considered the largest and most important collection of documents from and about the Canary Islands. Its origin lies in the creation of the institution itself, since from the very beginning the formation of a library was organized with the contributions of the first partners.That original library did not only have material librarian, but it was nourished of great archival collections and periodic publications.
Currently, the documentation center of El Museo Canario has a library, a file and a library, all of them of great patrimonial importance.
The library preserves printed books dated between the fifteenth century (incunabula) and the present, and tries to collect all publications published in the Canary Islands or by Canarian authors, in addition to collecting the works that have the Canary Islands in their subject. In this collection there are numerous rare and curious books, and even a good number of unique copies.
The archive of El Museo Canario houses fundamental collections for the history of the archipelago, such as the Archive of the Canary Islands Inquisition or the documentary collection of the Fuerte Casa de Adeje. About thirty documentary sets of private and family nature are part of this archive, which highlights the collections generated by such important characters of the insular culture as Benito Pérez Galdós, the brothers Juan and Fernando León y Castillo, José de Viera and Clavijo and many others.
The archive is completed by some historical collections of companies and associations and various artistic and figurative collections, among which the cartographic collection and the photographic archive stand out. The latter fund preserves thousands of photographs of former professionals such as Teodoro Maisch and Luis Ojeda Pérez.
The newspaper library of El Museo Canario, which houses more than a million copies of newspapers and magazines, is the most important collection of this type of document in the Canary Islands. It covers from the first known newspapers, which were distributed in manuscript copies (as is the case of the Correo de Canarias, which circulated between 1762 and 1763), to the current press.The wealth of this fund resides especially in the newspapers dated in the second half of the XIX century and the first years of the XX, since the province of Canarias (province unique at that time) was one of the most fertile of Spain in production of headers of press, a circumstance derived from the remoteness of the most important distribution centers in the country.

5. Museo de la Piratería

Some of the islands of the Canarian archipelago have been attacked by invaders and pirates throughout history. In Teguise there is a place called Piracy Museum which opened in February 2011, is located in Castillo de Santa Bárbara, which served of strength before the different pirate offensives that suffered the island of Lanzarote especially from the sixteenth century.

The fortress is in the mountain of Guanapay, it was a perfect strategic place to see any kind of attack coming, from here you can watch the whole island in any direction.

It is currently the Museum of Piracy and it shows information about some of the most universal pirates, also explains the history of the attacks of these invaders on the island of Lanzarote. The museum exposes how the population of the island managed to overcome the threat of pirate attacks.

You can get to know in depth the history of Teguise, you can see a model of the ancient city and it shows the power it had during the XVI and XVII centuries.

The reason why the islands were a favorite site for pirate attacks was because after discovering the New World it was a place to stop for the ships that made the route until the Americas.

6. Casa Museo del Campesino

Agriculture has always been one of the bases of the economy on the island, aware of the importance that this sector has had throughout history in San Bartolomé in Lanzarote you can visit the Museo del Campesino.

The Museum of the peasant is located at the crossroads located in the town of San Bartolomé, the building attracts a lot of attention, the work of the artist César Manrique whose influence can be seen in the museum, with a purely Lanzarote style. Next to the farmer's museum is a spectacular figure of about 15 meters called Monument to Fecundity. From the road that passes next to the building you can see how the bright white walls stand out.

Inside the museum we can find typical elements of the handicraft of the island of Lanzarote, information about the traditions of the area and how was the way of life of the farmers.

The museum of the Farmer also keeps a fantastic treasure, in the courtyard of the building there is an entrance to a volcanic grotto that was used in the past for the extraction of stone. Today this grotto has become an interesting restaurant. The Casa Museo del Campesino in San Bartolomé is a place that blends art and avant-garde.

7. Museo Etnográfico de La Gomera

Located in a 2-storey building in the town of Hermigua in the neighborhood of Las Hoyetas is the Ethnographic Museum of La Gomera. This museum aims to investigate, preserve and disseminate the popular culture of the island, do not claim to have a nostalgic view of the past but the center aims to revive the customs of the island with the aim of making visitors reflect on the social realization .

The Ethnographic Museum of La Gomera is located in a building built at the beginning of the 20th century and it is a review of how hard it was for the inhabitants of La Gomera adapt to the physical and abrupt environment that the island presents.

In the museum you can not only see objects such as farming implements, furniture, tools, ceramics, basketry etc. but it is possible to see other aspects that are part of the island's culture. The Ethnographic Museum of La Gomera would not be possible without the tireless work of Virgilio Brito, scholar of the traditions of La Gomera and lover of his land and of all the idiosyncrasies of the population. An indispensable place to know the traditional lifestyle of the inhabitants of the island.

8. Casa África

Casa África is a Spanish public consortium whose main objective is the promotion of relations between Africa, Europe and Spain. It is headquartered in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) and is integrated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Casa África is part of the Public Diplomacy Houses Network of the Spanish State together with Casa de América, Casa Árabe, Casa Asia, Casa Mediterráneo and the Sefarad-Israel Center.

10. Casa Ossuna
Historical buildings
Casa Ossuna was built in the second half of the 17th century by Captain Juan Manuel Delgado. It was in the 19th century when it was inherited by Mr. Manuel de Ossuna, historian and collector of documentary, furniture and art goods. The building will become future House Museum to exhibit all that collection.
