In the town of Agulo on the island of La Gomera is the Church of San Marcos Evangelista. It was previously a chapel and was founded in 160, the initiative, as in many of the churches of the island, arises from the residents of the population interested in having a place of worship. Until 1735 it was not called a church, after some works that transformed it into a more complete temple. At the beginning of the 20th century the church was demolished and rebuilt, giving rise to the building that can be visited today. The person in charge of the last remodeling was the architect Antonio Pintor who designed a Neo-Gothic style building that gave rise to the way we know it today.
Among the remarkable sculptures that can be found in the temple is the image of the Virgen de La Merced and of course San Marcos Evangelista. The church attracts a lot of attention since it has semicircular covers, with the silver Neogothic chalice that was a gift that the King Alfonso XIII made to the population of Agulo.
