Iglesia de la Asunción
The Mother Parish of Our Lady of the Assumption is the main parish of the town of San Sebastián de La Gomera, capital of the island of La Gomera (Canary Islands, Spain) and the mother church of the whole island.
The church has its origins in a hermitage built in the 15th century, time of which its current central nave belongs. In the eighteenth century it was enlarged several times due to the English attacks and the North African pirates. The original building was erected in the time of the first Hernán Peraza.
The current church blends in harmony the Mudejar, Gothic and Baroque styles. Its facade has a central body for the main entrance in red tuff and two side doors in white stone. The great reform suffered by the building is in the second half of the eighteenth century building the Chapel of the Pillar, which represents the triumph of the gomeros over the invaders, highlighting the fresco of the wall that reflects the attempted invasion, by the English admiral Charles Windhan in 1743.
Every five years the Church of the Assumption welcomes the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe (patron saint of La Gomera), during her lustral descent.
